Gutter cleaning and Mosquito Problems.
This has been one of the coldest springs in recorded history and I can’t remember a wetter one. Gutter cleaning has taken up a huge amount of our time here recently as all the trees have released the pollen sacks and tendrils, and gutters are overflowing everywhere!
We were recently contracted to clean these gutters in the Raleigh, NC area. Once we got there and proceeded to clean the gutters, we noticed the mosquitoes. Holy macaroni and cheese! Every time a handful of debris was removed, a large plume of mosquitoes would erupt out of the gutters. There were many thousands flying around our heads the whole time.
There was about an inch of water in the bottom of the gutters because they were severely clogged and it has been raining a lot lately. The debris on top of the gutters acted as an insulator and created a perfect breeding environment for the mosquitoes. You could actually see the larvae swimming around in some spots.
We left a note for the customer and found out later via email that they could not walk out on their deck or into their garage without being greeted by clouds of hungry mosquitoes. I guess it had been a couple of years since they had the gutters cleaned because the mosquito problem was not new to them. They had no idea that the infestation had originated in their dirty gutters.
This is the first really wet spring we have had in the Raleigh area in years, and I wonder how many other folks are having mosquito problems because of dirty gutters. I wonder how many people actually stop to think that their dirty, clogged gutter system, which are providing this breeding environment, is the root cause of their mosquito problems.
So if you are out on your deck here in the next couple months and you are being eaten alive by our needle nosed littel friends, take a look at your gutters. When was the last time they were cleaned?
